Most people have heard that getting a dental crown means two appointments, a temporary crown, and a lot of waiting. For years, that was just the reality of the process. But it doesn’t have to be anymore.
At the North Andover dental office of Dr. Gary C. Demetriou, DMD, we offer CEREC one-visit crowns — a technology that lets us design, create, and place a permanent crown in a single appointment. No temporary crown. No second trip. No lab wait time. Just a strong, natural-looking restoration the same day you come in.
Here’s how it works and why so many of our patients say it’s one of the best things about our practice.
What Is a Dental Crown and When Do You Need One?
A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are one of the most versatile restorations in dentistry. They’re used to:
- Protect a cracked or fractured tooth from further damage
- Restore a tooth after a large cavity or root canal
- Cover a severely worn or weakened tooth
- Improve the look of a misshapen or deeply discolored tooth
- Anchor a dental bridge in place
If Dr. Demetriou recommends a crown, it means the tooth needs more coverage and protection than a filling alone can provide. A crown is designed to last many years and, when properly cared for, can last a decade or more.
How the Traditional Crown Process Used to Work
Before CEREC technology, getting a crown looked something like this: you’d come in for a first appointment, the tooth would be prepared, and your dentist would take physical impressions of your mouth. Those impressions would be sent to an outside dental lab. A week or two later, you’d come back for a second appointment to have the permanent crown placed.
In the meantime, you’d be wearing a temporary crown made of a softer material that was never quite as comfortable or secure as the real thing. Some patients found eating difficult. Others worried about the temporary coming loose. And the whole process required at least two trips to the office.
How CEREC One-Visit Crowns Change Everything
With CEREC technology, the entire process happens in one visit. Here’s what that looks like at our North Andover office:
- Step 1: Digital Scanning Instead of messy physical impressions, we use a small handheld scanner to take precise digital images of your tooth. This takes just a few minutes and is completely comfortable.
- Step 2: Crown Design The digital images are sent to our in-office CEREC software, where Dr. Demetriou designs your custom crown on screen, tailoring the shape and fit to match your surrounding teeth.
- Step 3: In-Office Milling The design is sent electronically to our CEREC milling unit, which carves your crown from a block of high-quality porcelain in about 10 minutes. You’ll wait comfortably in the office while this happens.
- Step 4: Finishing and Placement The crown is crystallized and stained to match the natural color of your teeth, then placed and adjusted right there in the chair. You leave with a permanent crown the same day.
Why All-Porcelain Crowns Look and Feel More Natural
CEREC crowns are made entirely from porcelain, which gives them several advantages over older metal or metal-fused crowns:
- They match the color of your natural teeth precisely
- There’s no gray shadow at the gumline that metal crowns can sometimes create
- Porcelain doesn’t expand or contract with hot and cold foods the way metal does
- There’s no risk of metal allergies
- The result looks and feels like a natural tooth
Is a CEREC Crown Right for You?
CEREC technology is a great fit for most crown situations, but not every case calls for a same-day crown. Dr. Demetriou will always recommend the approach that’s best for your specific tooth and circumstances. In cases involving dental implants or certain complex restorations, a traditionally fabricated crown may be the better choice.
The best way to know is a simple consultation. Dr. Demetriou will take a look, explain your options clearly, and let you decide what works best for your schedule and your smile.
What North Andover Patients Are Saying
One of the things patients mention most often about our practice is the follow-up care they receive after procedures. As one long-time patient put it:
“After any dental procedure, he always calls us back for follow-up progress and addresses all of our questions. A nice touch.” Jackie D., North Andover
That same attentiveness carries through every crown appointment, from the first scan to the final placement.
