A tooth that is cracked, worn down, or severely decayed can affect more than just how your smile looks. It can make eating uncomfortable, cause sensitivity, and leave the tooth vulnerable to further damage. The good news is that a dental crown can restore that tooth completely, giving it back its strength, shape, and natural appearance. At our North Andover dental office, crowns are one of the most common and rewarding procedures we perform — and many patients are surprised by how straightforward the process really is.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gumline up. Think of it as a protective shell that restores the tooth to its original size, shape, and function. Crowns are made to match the color of your surrounding teeth, so they blend in naturally with your smile.
Crowns are used in a variety of situations, including:
- Teeth that are cracked or fractured
- Teeth that are severely decayed and cannot be restored with a filling alone
- Teeth that have become weak after a root canal
- Teeth that are worn down from grinding
- Teeth that are misshapen or deeply discolored
- Dental implants that need a visible tooth placed on top
Whether the issue is structural, cosmetic, or both, a crown is often the most effective long-term solution.
The CEREC Advantage: Your Crown in One Visit
One of the things that sets our North Andover practice apart is our CEREC technology, which allows Dr. Demetriou to design, mill, and place a permanent crown in a single appointment. No temporary crown. No second visit. No waiting weeks for a lab to send something back.
Here is how it works: Dr. Demetriou takes a precise digital scan of your tooth and uses the CEREC system to design a crown that fits your bite and matches your surrounding teeth. The crown is then milled right in the office from a high-quality ceramic block, and it is placed the same day.
For patients with busy schedules, this is a genuine game changer. You come in with a damaged tooth and leave with a permanent, beautiful crown — all in one visit.
What to Expect During the Crown Process
If you are getting a traditional crown over two appointments, here is what the process typically looks like:
First appointment: Dr. Demetriou prepares the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping it slightly to make room for the crown. An impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being made.
Second appointment: The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is carefully fitted, adjusted, and cemented into place.
With CEREC, both steps happen in one visit. Either way, the process is comfortable, and most patients are pleasantly surprised by how little it affects their day.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With proper care, dental crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer. The key factors are good daily hygiene, regular checkups, and avoiding habits that put excessive stress on the crown — like chewing on ice or grinding your teeth at night.
Dr. Demetriou has been placing and restoring crowns for nearly 40 years. That depth of experience means your crown is shaped precisely for your bite and built to last.
Is a Crown Right for You?
If you have a tooth that is causing you pain, sensitivity, or concern, the best first step is simply coming in for an exam. Dr. Demetriou will evaluate the tooth and walk you through your options clearly and honestly. Sometimes a filling is all that is needed. Other times, a crown is the right call for the long-term health of your smile.
